If the problem is caused by damaged or incompatible Internet Explorer settings or add-ins, you can usually resolve the problem by resetting Internet Explorer settings to the default settings.

When I used to click on a link a box opened up - "you have chosen to open:" and asked what Firefox should do with the file giving me a choice of "open with" or "save file". I would click "OK" on "open with" Microsoft Word and it would open.
Now it does not do that. It just goes directly to the download icon and when i click on that it says its downloading the link. I've been able to go from there and get to the file and open it but most of the time it wont. Regardless, I would like it to open immediately like it did originally. I think i must have accidentally changed something somewhere but I have no clue.
I'm very computer illiterate. How can I force to open the links in Chrome without downloading? The links are for local files.
You have to download the file type once, then right after that download, look at the status bar at the bottom of the browser.
Click the arrow next to that file and choose "always open files of this type". Just found your question whilst trying to solve another problem I'm having, you will find that currently Google isn't able to perform a temporary download so therefore you have to download instead.
I think the question was about to open a local file directly instead of downloading a local file to the download folder and open the file in the download folder, which seems not possible in Chrome, except some add-on mentioned above. Scroll down to Downloads under Download location: click the Change button and chose tmp folder. Then just close the screen. Click on any attachments and a small box to the left will appear, it should automatically open if you click on it.
When the bottom left box appears it will contain an arrow; click on it and choose the option "Always open files of this type". Going forward it will open the file instantly instead of the small box appearing to the left and you having to click on it to open.
